HEALTH

EXPOSURE – Of the approximately 100K black students enrolled in 3rd grade in NC, 29% were less likely to drop out of school if they have had a black teacher by 5th grade.

SAFETY & WELLNESS – African-Americans students comprise 25% of the NC student population, but suffer 50% of short-term suspensions.

HEALTH – 13.5% of youth between the ages of 10-17 in NC have obesity issues. That number becomes 14.9% if their families participate in WIC programs.

HOWL PROGRAM

The Solution

Carolina United’s Helping Others Win at Life (HOWL) Program is centered on the promotion of healthy lifestyle habits, socio-emotional learning, metacognitive skill building and goal achievement through flag football. Our certified mentors will partner with school and other community-based organizations to increase cultural competencies and social justice initiatives as well. Through this, we endeavor to provide lasting change in underserved communities and provide alternative ways for sustainable goal achievement.

STRATEGIC PRIORITIES

Provide a platform to connect young professionals and future leaders through fitness, mentorship and community engagement.

Build certified mentors who will assist with program implementation.

Develop socio-emotional and metacognitive life skills to help mentees create their own “toolkit” to sustain level of success.
